Porsche To Unleash Performance Car Fury In The US

Like it hasn't already? Apparently not enough so.

There are currently 21 flavors of the Porsche 911 on sale right now in the US. At the opposite end of the sport car spectrum, the Cayenne can be had in eight different variations. To avoid far too many numbers, we’ll pass on the rest of the lineup’s offerings, but you get the idea. As it turns out, Porsche isn’t done with variants of existing models, specifically for the performance market. According to The Detroit Bureau, Porsche will unleash performance car fury over the next few months with more than 20 new variations of its North American lineup.

“Demand for performance cars in the US has never been stronger,” states Porsche USA CEO Klaus Zellmer. This is a simple case of supply and demand. Zellmer also mentioned that his company’s US lineup “has never been better balanced between two and four door models.” US market sales have been going amazingly well too, with an increase of 3.6 percent last month alone. This year’s New York Auto Show is also the venue where the updated 911 GT3 and GTS, and Panamera Sport Turismo and Turbo SE Hybrid are having their US debuts following global reveals last month in Geneva.

Zellmer didn’t announce which Porsches will see new performance variants, but if we had to make a few guesses, we’ll go with the 718 Boxster and Cayman as well as the Macan and Cayenne. Why those? Because the former are now only sold in either base or S trims (not including the Cayman GT4), and the latter are SUVs. Enough said. We’ll have our answer soon enough, though.

GMP Performance Upgrades 911 Turbo

An American tuning firm from the heart of NASCAR country has upgraded output in a 911 Turbo Cabrio to 660 horsepower.

With the launch of the all-new 991 generation 911 Turbo set likely to take place next September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, aftermarket tuning firms are still making power and handling modifications to the outgoing generation, the 997 911 Turbo, which remains on sale until the new one arrives in showrooms. One of those firms is Charlotte, North Carolina, based GMP Performance who has just completed some custom work for a client on a one-of-a-kind 997 Turbo Cabrio.

Finished in GT Silver Metallic, this 911 Turbo was upgraded with a Bilstein coil over suspension, front ground control camber plates, a SpeedART exhaust with matte black tips, SpeedART header, an ECU upgrade and a racing performance clutch, amongst other mods. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, output from the 3.6-liter flat six is increased to a solid 660 horsepower (up from 493) and 700 lb-ft of torque. All told, some $30,000 was invested by its owner to turn this into one of the best performing aftermarket Turbos ever built.

Luxury Cars That Desperately Need A High Performance Variant

Please automakers, just make these cars a reality.

Ever since BMW and Mercedes began their rivalry with the E30 M3 and 190E Cosworth, the sporty luxury car segment has been one of the most important in the auto industry. Many companies have tried and failed to compete with the M3. More recently, certain competitors have topped the BMW in some aspects. Still, we believe there are a few luxury models that could use a performance enhancement. Each of these cars is in need of a performance halo variant to help bring attention to their respective model lineups.

Infiniti Q50

Infiniti tried and failed to create its own performance division called the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL). The brand currently sells its Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe with an optional 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 400 hp. This power is edging on M and AMG territory, but the rest of the car doesn't meet high performance benchmarks. The steer-by-wire system doesn't offer feedback to the driver and the suspension is tuned for comfort. We'd like to see Infiniti offer more powerful versions of the Q50 and Q60 with around 500 hp and more aggressive tuning.

Genesis G70

The G70 is the first all-new vehicle for the Genesis brand. The G80 was simply a rebadged Genesis, and the G90 was the Equus. Although it is just arriving, we would like to see Genesis borrow the N performance name from Hyundai. The G70's most powerful engine option is a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 with 365 hp. We'd like to see a sportier G70 N with around 100 extra horsepower.

Volvo V60

The Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar models were never the most popular sport models on the market, but they were still very good cars. Volvo has revealed the new 2019 V60 wagon, which shared engines and interior design with other Volvo models. The most powerful T8 trim produces 390 hp from a 2.0-liter twin-charged four-cylinder mated to a hybrid motor. Polestar is looking to become Sweden's answer to AMG and M, so tuned versions of the V60 and upcoming S60 could be in the works. We'd love to see even more than 390 hp along with more aggressive styling.

Jaguar XE

Just a few years ago, Jaguar competed against the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG with the XFR and XFR-S. When the smaller XE sedan arrived, we waited for an XER with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8. Unfortunately, that car never arrived and it may never reach production. Jaguar has said it does not plan to stick an SVR badge on the XE, which is a bit sad. This means the Project 8 may be the only V8 XE Jaguar ever builds.

Acura TLX

The Acura TLX has always been a bit of a disappointment in our eyes. The car never lived up to sporty TL models like the Type S and 3.7-liter SH-AWD. Acura did introduce a sportier looking A-Spec model, though it didn't add any extra power. Luckily, Acura is gearing up to add a new twin-turbo V6 engine to revive the Type S badge. We just hope the TLX is the beneficiary of this new engine.

Aftermarket Hybrid System Boosts Porsche Performance

It offers up to 350 hp of instant electric power but there is a catch.

This past weekend, the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, was the venue for the annual Porsche Rennsport Reunion. An estimated 60,000 Porsche fans attended to experience the largest gathering of vintage and modern Porsche race cars around.

A number of aftermarket vendors were on hand to showcase their wares, one of which was tuning company Vonnen promoting its hybrid upgrade for all Porsche 991 and 2012-on Boxster and Cayman models.

According to Vonnen, the system replaces the standard flywheel with a powerful electric motor that sends instant power and torque straight to the crankshaft. The engine, ECU and the rest of the drivetrain remain untouched.

The electric motor can also function as a generator to charge the onboard battery module. The Stage 1 system offers 175 horsepower and 150 lb ft of instant torque while the Stage 2 pack produces 350 hp and 294 lb ft. The base system weighs in at approximately 120 pounds and is controlled through your smartphone.

There are a number of driver-selectable modes and Vonnen claims substantial performance improvements without affecting smog compliance levels. You may even use less fuel when not pressing on thanks to the regenerative braking system, although, due to the small capacity of the battery and the nature of the setup, purely electric driving is not possible.

Development is underway on a similar system for pre-2012 versions of all three models as well as all air-cooled 911 models, these hybrid systems should be available to order during the course of 2019. The catch? Pricing starts at a cough-inducing $75,000 for the base package, that is a fair whack of cash even considering the big power boost. The technology is fascinating though and with time it is sure to filter down to mainstream vehicles too.

8 American Performance Cars We're Thankful For In 2018

Over the holidays, let's give thanks for the best American cars of the year.

If it's customary for you to sit down at the dinner table on Thanksgiving to discuss what we're thankful for this year spare a thought for all of the outstanding American performance cars that have graced the roads in 2018. Last year in 2017, we gave thanks for the Tesla Roadster, Dodge Demon, Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, Chevy Corvette ZR1, and Hennessey VelociRaptor. In keeping with this tradition, here are eight badass American performance cars revealed in 2018.

Tesla Model 3 Performance

The base Tesla Model 3 is a pretty quick car, but "pretty quick" never seems good enough for Tesla. This year, Tesla released a faster version of the Model 3 called the Model 3 Performance. It packs unique dual motors, good for 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 155 mph, and a 310-mile range. If you want an electric BMW M3 killer, this is your car.

Acura NSX

Even though it doesn't come from an American brand, the Acura NSX is built and designed in the US, which is why it made our list of cars we are thankful for in 2016. The NSX isn't all-new for 2019 but it is heavily refreshed. Along with a new coat of orange paint, Acura has tweaked the NXS to make it more livable on the street and more responsive on the track. These small changes add up to make a big difference.

Buick Regal GS

The Buick Regal GS may not have the firepower of some of the other cars on this list, but it is a very competent sports sedan with tons of daily driver accouterments. Under the hood sits a 3.6-liter V6 from a Camaro, producing 310 hp going out to AWD through a nine-speed automatic. Buick may have ditched the manual but the Regal GS is still a cool sleeper sedan.

Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye

You know what the Dodge Challenger Hellcat needed? An extra 90 hp! We are kidding of course, but that is what Dodge gave it anyway. The new Challenger Hellcat Redeye now produces 797 hp from its 6.2-liter supercharged V8. What kind of world are we living in where 707 hp isn't enough? A world we are thankful for, that's where.

Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison

Chevy already builds a hardcore off-road version of its Colorado mid-size pickup truck called the ZR2. To take the truck a step further, Chevy has teamed up with American Expedition Vehicles to create the Colorado ZR2 Bison. Power remains the same from either a turbocharged diesel engine or a V6 and Chevy has made the ZR2 Bison even more capable with added off-road parts and greater ground clearance.

Cadillac CT6-V

The Cadillac CT6-V was initially set to be called the CT6 V-Sport. However, Cadillac deemed the performance was high enough to make it a fully fledged V car. The CT6-V is powered by a new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 called the Blackhawk. It produces 550 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque but may be tuned to produce even more in the future mid-engine Corvette.

Ford Mustang Bullitt

Some families have traditions involving certain movies they like to watch on Thanksgiving. For car enthusiasts, Bullitt is one of the best choices due to its famous chase scene with Steven McQueen and his Highland Green Mustang. To celebrate the movie, Ford has brought back the Bullitt Mustang with a unique special edition. In addition to the green paint and badge delete, the Bullitt Mustang now produces 480 hp from its 5.0-liter V8 going out through a six-speed manual transmission only.
