Believe it or not, the next generation Porsche 911, internally called the 992, is not so far away from making its debut appearance. It’s expected to be good to go for the 2019 model year, and it won’t be too long after that when the new 911 Turbo arrives. Thanks to our spy photographers, we have some fresh images of the 992 Turbo caught during some winter testing in Sweden. Consider yourselves lucky because this prototype is barely disguised; you can see a lot of details that will be on the production version. So let’s dig in.
Starting up front, notice the double LED DR: stripes and wider fenders. Like in previous prototypes, the hood extends all the way to the bumper, which is reminiscent of the classic 911 body. Moving out back, there’s a fixed rear wing and squared off exhaust pipes. The air intakes in the rear fenders are also present, although their actual shape is still being hidden with some annoying camouflage. Going back to the rear wing for a moment, the difference with this prototype verses previous ones is that yes, it’s fixed, as opposed to the retractable wings we saw previously on regular 992 prototypes. Given that, it appears the new 911 Turbo will have, at least as an option, a fixed wing, but we can’t fully confirm this just yet.
Output? Well, obviously, the butt-mounted boxer six will be present. It’ll be twin-turbocharged with an output said to be around 600 hp. The current 991 911 Turbo S, for comparison’s sake, has 580 hp. There’s no way Porsche could offer less output, but bumping it up 20 ponies or so is not terribly hard. As with all 911 Turbos, power will be distributed to all four wheels and the PDK dual-clutch gearbox is expected to return to handle that task. As of now, Porsche will unveil the 992 911 Carrera at Paris this September while the new Turbo you see here is expected for a Frankfurt 2019 debut, exactly one year after the Carrera’s reveal.
