It's been barely more than a month since Porsche revealed the updated Macan in Shanghai. But it's wasted little time in getting production up and rolling. And now that it is, you can bet the German automaker will be churning them out at a suitably record pace.
Superseding the model first introduced in 2014, the revised Macan benefits from updated styling and equipment to further cement its place as Porsche's best-selling model. Out of the 246,000 vehicles it sold around the world last year, nearly 100,000 were Macans (compared to 25,000 or so 718s and 32,000 911s).
“The Macan is the very definition of a successful model – for Porsche and for the Leipzig site,” said plant manager Gerd Rupp. “When the factory was put into operation in February 2014, the plan was to produce 40,000 units per year. Today we produce more than 90,000 units per year for markets around the world, and since 2014, approximately 350,000 units of the compact SUV have been delivered to customers worldwide.”
To keep up with demand, Porsche expects to start cranking them out at a rate of over 420 units every day.
At that rate, it will match the pace of production of the previous version by the beginning of September, mere days from now. The first example of the new Macan was ordered in Mamba Green Metallic, and is headed to a customer in China. Little surprise, since the Middle Kingdom has emerged as Porsche's largest market worldwide. Of those 246,000+ vehicles it sold worldwide last year, over 71,000 were delivered to China – more than the 68,000 it sent to the United States (or any other individual market). And of the 350,000 Macans the company has made since 2014, over 100,000 have been sold in China.
