When The Duke Invites You To Drive Supercars At Goodwood, You Don't Say No

Goodwood's first 'Press Day' in over 50 years was a spectacular day of driving some incredible machines.

Goodwood is best known for the Festival of Speed and Revival, spectacular events that draw in hundreds of thousands of spectators each year. But last week, The Duke of Richmond and Gordon (previously Lord March), invited a select few members of the media to the Goodwood Motor Circuit for its inaugural ‘Press Day.’ Inspired by the Motor Show Press Day that his grandfather used to hold in the 1950s and 1960s, it gave Goodwood’s media partners the chance to sample a range of some of the latest (and greatest) cars on the road.

From the brand-new Aston Martin Vantage to the Rolls-Royce Dawn, we spent a glorious, sun-kissed day, driving supercars on the legendary Goodwood circuit, and on the verdant country lanes around the Estate. After five days of unrelenting rainfall, the sun graciously appeared on the morning of the event and kept his hat on until early evening, giving us the chance to sample some epic roof-down driving in the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster and Aston Martin DB11 Volante. Road routes were mapped out, taking us through the Goodwood grounds, past the house and up the legendary hill climb, the cheering crowd of car nuts replaced by casual golfers and grazing sheep.

A few miles of near-empty roads provided the chance to make the Lamborghini’s 740-horsepower V12 wail and scream up to speed, with a cacophony of pops and crackles entering the cabin on the overrun. In Sport + mode, the DB11 also delivered plenty of aural pleasure, and was a surprisingly feisty proposition, a very marked difference from its calm-and-collected GT mode that drivers will use to cruise around in. McLaren didn’t disappoint either, arriving with a selection of its Sport Series models, including the 570S Coupe and Spider, and 570GT, as well as a 720S in signature orange livery.

After an introduction to the 2.4-mile track by Goodwood’s Chief Driving Instructor, David Brise, followed by an obligatory couple of sighting laps, I made a beeline for the 720S. Loud and aggressive at start up, the 720S was relatively refined on the road (as long as you avoided the potholes) but this is a car capable of hitting a top speed of 212 mph, of reaching 62 mph in less than three seconds with a colossal 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque at its disposal. All that performance and power is there, scratching at the surface. It’s like a professionally trained combat canine, the Belgian Malinois of the supercar world. Well-behaved and docile one minute, ready to rip out your throat the next.

While we lamented the fact we couldn’t sample the extreme side of 720S on track, a stunning baby-blue McLaren 570S Spider awaited us in the pits to soften the blow. The Jackie Stewart Pavilion was our base for the day, the modern space with large balconies that overlook the paddock and track the ideal spot to knock back some espressos with other media and PR while watching the cars accelerate past the pit lane to the challenging Madgwick Corner. Driving the 720S, DB11, Aventador, as well as a V12-powered Ferrari GTC4Lusso on the road was undoubtedly plenty of fun. But it is a rare treat indeed to drive the Goodwood Motor Circuit, and when you see what cars were on offer, you’ll understand why it was so hard to leave it.

Joining the McLaren 570S Spider was a Honda NSX (the original, pre-prototype, chassis #0000 no less), a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS (manual), a Ford Mustang packing 670 horsepower courtesy of a Roush developed supercharger kit and a short-shifting manual, a Rolls-Royce Dawn, BMW M5, Aston Martin Vantage, Maserati Gran Turismo MC Stradale, and Bentley Bentayga. Passenger rides were also offered in the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder and Mini Challenge Race Car, the latter making most occupants revisit their lunch in the back of their throats. At the top of the pile were the McLaren 570S Spider and Honda NSX. We’ll have a comparison review of these cars shortly.

Wearing an Acura badge on this side of the pond, the Honda NSX is a phenomenally playful machine on the track. The complex delivery of its 581-hp, with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 doing the bulk of the heavy lifting behind your head, and a trio of electric motors adding power precisely when and where it’s needed, all sent to the tarmac via a sublime nine-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission, coupled with beautifully–weighted steering and a spectacular soundtrack, the NSX was an intoxicating car to drive and one I was reluctant to pit after a few laps.

After laps in Normal and Sport mode, McLaren’s test driver for the day put the 570S Spider into Track mode, transforming the car into a completely different animal. Louder, more responsive to the touch, up on its toes and just so, so fast. The 720S takes things to an entirely new level, and then there’s the Senna and recently-revealed Senna GTR up in the supercar stratosphere, but after sampling the 570S in track mode my head was already in the clouds. The award for most unique driving experience has to go to the Rolls-Royce Dawn. Driving two-and-a-half tons around a track shouldn’t be this easy.

Effortless and graceful, wafting around on a bed of air, gliding from corner to corner with gentle movements of the steering wheel, all while cocooned in a cabin so beautiful you could cry. But the real winner of the day was brand Goodwood. This year, the Festival of Speed will celebrate its silver jubilee. For almost 25 years, millions of gearheads have flocked to the manicured lawns of the Duke’s estate to enjoy the greatest summer garden party on the planet. Geneva, New York, Paris, Shanghai, Frankfurt. I’ve been to them all, and nothing comes close to Goodwood. It has become the greatest car show in the world.

Testament to that is Goodwood’s ability to attract so many prestigious marques for what was an unforgettable day of driving pleasure. Travelling thousands of miles for a single day may sound extreme. But when Goodwood comes calling, you don’t say no. See you at FOS 2018.

Ford Smart Mobility Plan

PALO ALTO, CA- Ford recently hosted automotive journalists from around the world at their new Silicon Valley research facility in Southern California.

Under the banner of the “Ford Smart Mobility Plan”, the staff at the Research & Innovation Centre (RIC) instigated 25 global experiments designed to hone in on future technology transportation solutions.

On June 23, six months after the opening, Mark Fields, president and CEO of Ford announced that the company would shift into the next phase of the plan, moving from research to implementation, with new pilot programs to improve connectivity, data collection, driver information and mobility technologies as the industry evolves inevitably towards a future with more semi-autonomous and, eventually, fully-autonomous vehicles. Some of the announced projects include dynamic shuttle systems, peer-to-peer car sharing and flexible ownership programs that are being explored in the U.S. and Europe.

Among the many new plans and technologies, my top five take-aways from the demonstrations are:

“Hey, is that a Ford bike?”

In an increasingly congested, urban-concentrated world, Ford has recognized that getting to work sometimes requires more than just one mode of transportation, using instead a multi-modal mix, combining the car commute with trains, buses, subways and, yes, with a new experimental Ford e-bike.

Three electric-assist designs adopted from an in-house engineering competition are moving further in development, including the MoDe:Me personal bike, the MoDe:Pro commercial delivery bike and the MoDe:Flex enthusiast’s bike.

The e-bikes can be folded and/or dismantled and electrically charged while stored in Ford vehicles. Ranges and charging times are being finalized but an add-on MoDe:Link smartphone app would include route planning, traffic monitoring, parking and transit links, along with eye-free navigation, vibrating the left or right handgrip to indicate direction.

A smartphone app, like the MyFord wearable apps being developed to work in conjunction with plug-in hybrids, will eventually also be available for smart watches and Android Wear.

“Back, back, whoa.”

Ford demonstrated the Pro Trailer Backup Assist debuting on the 2016 F-150 pickup truck. Turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction to where you want the trailer to go seems counterintuitive for some, especially for novice drivers.

Using the backup camera for dynamic hitch location has made life easier, but now, with the Pro Trailer Backup Assist, the driver simply uses his mirrors and backup camera to steer the trailer, not the truck, by simply turning a knob on the dashboard.

Even experienced drivers will marvel at absolutely straight backup lines with the control knob centred, and the new technology makes reversing quicker and easier for all.

“There’s a parking spot over there!”

Backing up a trailer isn’t the only challenge. Some drivers dread parallel parking as much as they did on the day of their driver’s test.

Utilizing 12 ultrasonic sensors, Ford’s Enhanced Park Assist not only takes over the steering and assists with parallel parking, it also now works with perpendicular parking, like say, fitting into a gap in an underground parking lot.

Ford even had us test a new remote parking system that enables a driver to move the car with buttons on a key fob while standing outside the vehicle, handy to get your car in out of particularly tight spots when someone’s parked too close to you.

“Eek! A spider!”

An inadvertently humourous Ford survey found that, along with the challenges of backing up and parallel parking, younger drivers actually fear other drivers more than death, public speaking and, yes, even spiders.

Which is why a new generation of customers is opting for compulsory safety technologies like rearview cameras, blind-spot monitoring, park assist systems, lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control. Pre-collision assist and pedestrian detection, already available in Europe will be coming to the U.S. and Canada by 2019.

Think about the evolution of all those technologies and you can see how they will eventually blend into fully autonomous vehicle operation without any driver input, a concept which, by the way, doesn’t bother Millennials and Generation Z members as much as it does Boomers and older drivers.

“Say ‘cheese”

The driver-assist technologies listed above are based on ultrasonic detection, radar-based systems and, more than ever, on cameras. Rearview cameras are becoming the norm but Ford is expanding into split-view front and rear cameras, 360-degree monitoring and a variety of other visual and sensing applications.

The coming 2016 Ford Super Duty will feature up to seven cameras on board and, by 2018, rear cameras will be standard on all Ford vehicles.

Ford is also experimenting with hydrophobic lenses that will shun dirt and water. And other potential camera applications include (cue the creepy music) monitoring driver behaviour, to tie in with lane keeping for drowsy driver alerts.

The above are only a few of the systems and technologies being explored by engineers across the company and by Ford staff at the Silicon Valley Research & Innovation Centre. Some of the other displays on hand included Ford’s new third-generation Sync 3 infotainment/communication system with a corresponding AppLink for your smartphone, the increasing use of organics instead of petroleum-based components, a new, faster Carbon3D parts manufacturing process, and new lightweight components that, in one example, cut the weight of an experimental Ford Fusion by 800 lb or 25 percent, achieving the same curb weight as a two-sizes-smaller Fiesta.

That’s a broad range of research and new technologies that recognizes the changing times and needs of modern mobility and transportation.

“Our goal,” as Mark Fields said, “is to change the way the world moves – just as Henry Ford did more than 100 years ago.”

Porsche's Coupe-ified Cayenne Shows Itself In Prototype Form

The Cayenne is ready to take on the SUV-coupe market.

It seems like no matter how many new models an automaker releases, there always seems to be more room for SUVs. BMW started the trend of SUV-coupes with the X6: an uglier, less practical version of the X5. The X6 has become better looking over time, and has spawned countless competitors from Mercedes, Audi, and now Porsche. Rumors indicated that Porsche would build several new models, including a Cayenne-based SUV-coupe. The rumors were clearly true, because we've just spotted this new SUV out testing.

Like most SUV-coupes, the Cayenne will likely receive a chopped roofline resembling a two-door coupe, without sacrificing all of the practicality that an SUV offers. The rear hatch and rear headroom will likely be compromised, as it is on competitors like the BMW X6, Mercedes GLE Coupe, and Audi Q8. Based on the appearance of the test mule, the Cayenne Coupe will resemble a cross between the standard Cayenne, the smaller Macan, and the Panamera Sport Turismo. This could change on the production car, but we like what we see so far. At the back, a retractable spoiler will increase aerodynamics at high speeds.

We can't confirm whether the Cayenne Coupe will have seating for four or five passengers. This prototype was a four-seater, but a middle seat may be offered on the production version. We expect the Cayenne Coupe to share engines and an interior with the standard car. These SUV-coupes have been hit and miss in terms of styling, so we hope Porsche can get it right. Expect to see the production car in late 2019 as a 2020 model.
