Porsche Ranks Highest in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

For the third year in a row, U.S. customers have rated Porsche highest among all automotive nameplates in the 2015 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

In addition to the brand taking overall honors, the Porsche 911 ranked highest for the fourth consecutive year in its vehicle segment (Midsize Premium Sporty Car), while Boxster and Cayman swept the first two places in the Compact Premium Sporty Car segment.

In its first year of production, the Porsche Macan was awarded the highest rank in the Compact Premium SUV segment.

The Cayenne and Panamera models achieved third place in their vehicle segments of Midsize Premium SUV and Large Premium Car.

As a result, this is the first time that five Porsche model series have reached the top 3 rankings in their respective segments.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study measures the number of problems experienced by U.S. customers during the first 90 days of ownership.

Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles with a lower score meaning higher quality.

Porsche scored only 80 points on the problems per 100 scale, compared to the premium industry average of 110. The overall industry average was 112.

Study Validates Onstar Injury Prediction Service

OnStar’s Injury Severity Prediction analyzes crash information like force of impact and direction of impact to determine the probability of severe injury to the vehicle occupants. OnStar advisors then relay the Injury Severity Prediction rating to 9-1-1 centers, which may choose to adjust the level and priority of response dispatched to a crash scene.

OnStar’s Injury Severity Prediction service is accurately predicting the severity of crash victims’ injuries, allowing for improved on-scene treatment, according to findings of a recent study.

Injury Severity Prediction (ISP) is an algorithm that OnStar uses in properly equipped Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in the U.S. and Canada to provide additional information to first responders following a vehicle crash.

The algorithm analyzes crash information like force of impact and direction of impact to determine the probability of severe injury to the vehicle occupants.

OnStar Advisors then relay the Injury Severity Prediction rating to 9-1-1 centers, which may choose to adjust the level and priority of response dispatched to a crash scene.

Over the past four years, General Motors, OnStar and the University of Michigan’s International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM), led by Dr. Stewart Wang, conducted research that illustrates how crash data can assist first responders.

This was the first known study to match real-life injury outcomes with crash telemetry data.

Now that the algorithm for predicting severe injuries has been validated, the next step is educating the emergency response community so it can adjust training and protocols.

Pilot programs will be held in early summer.

Taking input from the pilot sessions, the training will be adjusted and rolled out to all first responders in the fall.

OnStar Injury Severity Prediction is part of OnStar’s Automatic Crash Response service, available as part of the OnStar Protection, Security and Guidance plans.

OnStar responds to more than 5,000 vehicle crashes every month.

Genesis Tops Porsche In Yet Another JD Power Study

The Korean automakers just keep dominating.

To say that the Korean Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands are "on the rise" would be a massive understatement. After the Genesis brand topped Consumer Reports' yearly rankings, the Korean trio beat Porsche with a 1-2-3 finish in the JD Power Initial Quality Study. Some skeptics may say that initial quality isn't as important as dependability, where Lexus still dominates, but Automotive News reports that Genesis just scored another major win in JD Power's 2018 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study.

The Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study is meant to measure new-vehicle appeal, by surveying nearly 68,000 new car owners and lessees after 90 days of ownership. The study measures consumer's emotional attachment and level of excitement with 77 features, then uses the information to help automakers make necessary improvements. Each automaker is scored on a 1,000 point scale, and this year Genesis finished number one with a score of 884.

Porsche finished second with 883 points with BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Cadillac, Land Rover, Lexus, Infiniti, and Jaguar following up. Lincoln gained 12 points over 2017, helped by the Navigator's score of 915 (the highest of any vehicle tested). Jaguar posted the biggest fall, mainly because the brand hasn't introduced any new models this year. Chevrolet was the highest ranked non-luxury brand, while Mitsubishi was ranked at the bottom.
