All-New Porsche 911 Final Testing Involves Drifting, Of Course

We're only a few weeks away from the official debut.

Set to have its global premiere later this month at the LA Auto Show, the all-new 992 generation 2020 Porsche 911 looks, well… like a 911. You might even be hard pressed to see any visual changes compared to the outgoing 991 model. But they’re there. You just have to look closely, such as the new taillight design. Underneath its familiar shaped body, however, lies an updated version of the existing platform that, as rumors claim, can accommodate a hybrid powertrain one day. But until that day arrives, we’ll be blessed with updated twin-turbo flat-six engines and the usual and guaranteed to be improved steering and handling capabilities.

In order to make all of that happen, Porsche put many 911 prototypes through rigorous testing, and today the automaker has released official “spy” images of those test mules taking a beating.

Porsche claims it is putting its next 911 “under a great deal of stress” by evaluating it in various climate zones with temperatures reaching as high as 185 degrees Fahrenheit in the deserts of the Middle East and elevation changes spanning over 2.5 miles in the Colorado Rockies. Additional cold weather testing was conducted in the European Arctic Circle. No component is being left unchecked regardless of extreme conditions. Remember, the 911 has always been regarded as the everyday sports car, so must be able to handle the stresses of everyday driving.

“In addition to its outstanding performance, it’s the 911’s suitability for daily use that has always put it in a class of its own,” commented Andreas Pr?bstle, Project Manager for the new 911. “That’s why we test the vehicle under all conditions, and in every type of weather and region. The vehicles’ drivetrain must function as flawlessly as its fluids, systems, operating processes and displays – it’s the only way we can be certain that the vehicle is able to travel through all regions of the world without faults.”

In addition to extreme weather and condition testing, the new 911 has spent plenty of time lapping the Nurburgring as well as Italy’s Nardo track. Plenty of drifting practice took place on a regular basis. Consider November 2018 to be ‘Porsche 911 Month’ because it’s not so often an all-new 911 generation arrives. Chances are there’ll be more teaser information from Porsche in the coming few weeks. Stay tuned.

This Is The Stunning All-New 2020 Porsche 911

Rear-engined. Flat-six. Iconic shape. Pure 911.

After months of spy shots and rumors and a leak here and there, the eighth-generation Porsche 911 has finally arrived, making its live debut here at the 2018 LA Show. Code-named 992, the new 911 is unmistakably a 911, retaining its overall iconic shape and rear-engine setup. But this new 911 has a more muscular look, an all-new interior, and a new generation of turbocharged flat-six engines. Both 911 Carrera S and 4S come powered by an upgraded version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six tuned to develop 443 hp – a 23 hp gain over the outgoing S models. Porsche claimed it achieved this additional power with improvements to the fuel injection system, higher compression ratio, and relocated intercoolers and turbochargers.

For now, a new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission is standard but Porsche promises the seven-speed manual will return at a later date. These engine improvements and new gearbox add up to even better performance. Porsche says to expect the rear-wheel-drive 911 Carrera S to blast from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds. The all-wheel drive 4S will do the deed in 3.4 seconds. Both figures are a 0.4-second improvement over its immediate predecessors.

Adding the optional Sport Chrono Package will decrease each of those times by two tenths of a second. Top speed has been clocked at 191 mph for the Carrera S and 190 mph for the 4S. Engineers also focused on new systems for increased safety and comfort, specifically Wet Mode. This new and standard feature detects water on the road, preconditions the stability control and anti-lock brake systems as necessary, and warns the driver about those road conditions. There’s also a camera-based warning and brake assist system, also standard, capable of detecting the risk of collision with moving objects, specifically other cars, and will initiate emergency braking if deemed necessary.

Other impressive pieces of safety tech include optional Night Vision Assist, which utilizes a thermal camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, and an Emergency Assist Function. But this is all mostly invisible to human eyes; what about the exterior design? Well, what can we say? It’s without question a Porsche 911. There are, however, several changes. Among them, the LED headlights are redesigned, as are the front and rear bumpers. The door handles are now electric units, and the taillights are much slimmer and feature a full-width LED bar.

Take a tape measure to both the 992 and the outgoing car and you’ll discover the wider wheel arches that increase overall width by exactly 1.77 inches up front. Rear body width is now the same width of the previous Carrera 4 and GTS, 72.9 inches. Those larger wheel arches can accommodate a wider 1.6-inch front track. To help reduce overall weight, every body panel on the car is now made of aluminum, the sole exceptions being the front and rear fascias. Wheel sizes are staggered with 20-inches up front and 21 at the rear. For 911 fans, Porsche also made a styling tribute to past 911s with the front hood’s pronounced contours and extending all the way to the bumper.

The all-new cabin takes inspiration from 1970s era 911s, most noticeably with the dashboard’s straight lines with recessed instruments. Both left and right of the centrally-located tachometer are two thin, frameless driver information displays. Under the 10.9-inch touchscreen is switch panel with five buttons that provide access to a number of vehicle functions. Adaptive 8-way sport seats with improved lateral support are optional.

For now, Porsche has only revealed the S and 4S models, so we don’t know just yet what the new base price will be for the Carrera and Carrera 4 models. But the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S will begin at $114,250, including the $1,050 destination fee. The 4S starts off at $121,650. Both prices are over $8,000 more than before, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar increase for the base 911s as well. Both the S and 4S will arrive in dealerships next summer and Porsche is already taking orders.

All-New Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet Spied On The Street For The First Time

The new 911 Turbo has been spotted with the roof down for the first time.

It’s been a while since we had a new sighting of the new Porsche 911 Turbo as the automaker prepares to unleash the new 992 generation of the iconic sports car. As the summer ends, a test driver has been caught taking advantage of the fleeting sunshine, giving us our first look at the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet with the top down. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a glimpse of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet, however, as a prototype of the convertible sports car was spotted getting a workout at the Nurburgring back in June showing off its soft top roof.

Porsche has tried to disguise sections of the front fascia, but it otherwise looks production ready. Compared to the standard 911, the new Turbo sports wider fenders giving it a more muscular appearance and a large rear spoiler.

Sources suggest the next-generation 911 Turbo will be powered by a twin-turbo flat-six with an output of around 600 horsepower. Don’t forget the current 911 Turbo S packs 580 hp, so it isn’t unreasonable to expect the all-new model to deliver at least 600 hp. Power will be sent to all four wheels through the latest version of Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

The 992-generation Porsche 911 Carrera, which has already been spied undisguised multiple times, will likely be unveiled in November at the LA Auto Show. Looking back at Porsche’s model history, the Turbo version typically debuts a year after the Carrera, so we’re not expecting the new 911 Turbo to arrive until later next year, possibly at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Porsche Confirms When All-New 911 Will Debut With Sexy Teaser

Mark your calendars, because we now know exactly when the covers are coming off the all-new Porsche 911.

The wait is nearly over. In less than two weeks, Porsche will lift the wraps off the all-new eighth-generation 911 at the 2018 LA Auto Show. Porsche has now confirmed exactly when the covers will come off: mark your calendars for November 27, 8.00 pm PST.

With its debut imminent, the teaser campaign for the 2020 Porsche 911 is gathering pace as a shadowy teaser video has been posted on Porsche’s Facebook page showing the car’s shapely silhouette. It looks like, well, a 911, as Porsche says the new model retains the sports car’s “timeless design”. In other words, expect the new 911 to have an evolutionary design since Porsche doesn’t want to mess with a winning formula.

We’re most likely looking at the new 385-hp Carrera or a more powerful 450-hp Carrera S since these are the two models that are expected to debut this month. While the teaser does a good job of hiding the details, we’ve already seen the new Porsche 911 naked thanks to leaked spy shots.

To the untrained eye, the new model looks like any other 911 sporting the same familiar shape, but there are some key changes such as a new taillight design and larger proportions. Under the skin is an updated version of the current car’s platform that will eventually incorporate a hybrid powertrain. That won’t happen for a few years yet, so we can expect the first iterations to use updated twin-turbo flat-six engines.

Like the outgoing model, hotter versions of the new 911 will also arrive in the next few years – we’ve already seen the new 911 GT3 being put through its paces. In the meantime, prototypes of the new 911 are being rigorously tested in a variety of hot and cold climates to make sure the “sports car icon continues the tradition of being the best 911 of all time.”

All-New 2019 Acura RDX Production Begins: This Is A Big Deal

Acura needs this $54 million investment to pay off.

The Acura RDX has been around since 2007 and it’s since become a vital crossover for the luxury brand. The third generation RDX was revealed in full at this year’s New York Auto Show and production is now underway. Acura made the official announcement that yesterday, May 15, the first 2019 RDXs began rolling off the assembly line in East Liberty, Ohio. \ The new RDX, according to Acura, is a “clean-sheet, top-to-bottom redesign” of its hot-selling five-passenger compact luxury crossover.

Its success is so important to the brand, in fact, that Acura invested some $54 million in new technologies and production techniques at the Ohio facility. The new RDX, the first generation that was entirely designed and developed in America, is the first new model that utilizes Acura’s new precision crafted performance build philosophy. For example, there’s a new roller hemming process for the vehicle’s extra-wide panoramic moonroof, and the use of high-performance structural adhesives for enhanced body rigidity. There’s even a new multilayer paint system for premium color options. It’s also important to note the 2019 RDX is built on an exclusive platform, whose wheelbase is 2.6 inches longer than that of its immediate predecessor.

Overall length is increased by 2.5 inches, thus allowing for additional passenger and cargo space. Because of this minor growth spurt, Acura decided to drop the previous V6 engine with the same direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC four-cylinder we’ve come to see in other new Hondas. Total output is rated at 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The old V6 offered 279 hp and 252 lb-ft. Power goes to either the front or all four wheels (via the excellent and latest Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system) through a 10-speed automatic transmission. Since 2006, the Acura RDX has been the top-selling compact luxury crossover in the US, and the automaker has no intention of allowing that to change.

Presenting The All-New 2019 Porsche Cayenne

Lighter, more powerful, and as expensive as ever.

Porsche has just revealed its all-new Cayenne SUV just ahead of its live debut at Frankfurt next month. This third-generation Cayenne may look like its immediate predecessor, but underneath that 911-inspired styling is an SUV that’s lighter and more powerful than before. For its initial launch, two six-cylinder engines will be available to US buyers, a turbocharged 3.0-liter with 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.9-liter twin-turbo with 440 hp and 406 lb-ft, the latter powering the Cayenne S.

Both engines are paired to a new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels; all-wheel drive is now standard across the board. Performance wise, Porsche claims the base engine will take the Cayenne from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, or 5.6 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. The Cayenne S’s twin-turbo makes 0-60 mph in 4.9 (4.6 with the Sport Chrono) possible. Porsche has clocked the base Cayenne’s best quarter-mile time at 14.2 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph. The Cayenne S does the same sprint in 13.2 seconds (with the Sport Chrono pack) and tops off at 164 mph. Of course, the new Cayenne isn’t just fast on track, it’s also a capable mild off-roader with four modes: Mud, Gravel, Sand, or Rocks.

As with all new cars today, shaving weight is essential, and Porsche developed a new light weight chassis that makes the vehicle up to 143 lbs lighter than its predecessor. Like the latest Panamera, the Cayenne’s body is a mix of alloy and steel while the exterior is made almost entirely of aluminum, as is the floorpan assembly, front section and nearly all chassis components. Even the newly developed lithium-ion polymer starter battery accounts for 22 lbs in weight savings alone. Porsche also made major changes to the new Cayenne’s chassis, with a separated link design for the front axle and a multilink rear axle. Another first are staggered front and rear tire sizes, 19 and 21 inches (20 and 21 inchers are optional), respectively.

Porsche wants the Cayenne to be the true "sports car" in its segment. While the exterior styling looks very similar to the outgoing Cayenne, the new SUV is slightly longer and wider for a more athletic look, but the wheelbase length remains unchanged. Cargo space has been increased by nearly 15 percent. Standard LED lighting adorns both front and rear units, and buyers can opt for either the Porsche Dynamic Light System or LED Matrix Beam headlights. The interior design borrows some styling elements from the new Panamera, such as the standard 12.3-inch full-HD touchscreen.

To avoid so many buttons, Porsche wisely integrated many functions into the touchscreen, but the remaining center console analog controls feature a smartphone-like, glass-look touch surface. The driver has two 7-inch full-HD displays showing all relevant data. Standard safety includes all sorts of assist tech, such as Lange Change, Lane Keep, traffic jam assist, ParkAssist with Surround View, and adaptive cruise control. The 2019 Porsche Cayenne, which will hit US dealerships in mid-2018, is priced from $65,700 for the base model and $82,900 for the S, excluding a $1,050 delivery charge. We’ll be on the showroom floor at Frankfurt and we’ll have more details at that time.

All-New 2019 Acura RDX Is Bigger, Torquier, Sharper

New RDX pairs turbo power with 10-speed automatic and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive with torque vectoring.

After teasing us with a near-production prototype at the Detroit show and revisions earlier this month, Acura has fully revealed the 2019 RDX SUV. First I want to say thank you to Acura for not taking as long to roll out the RDX as it did the NSX. That was painful. Then again, while the NSX might be the company’s purported soul, the RDX and MDX are the lifeblood of the Acura brand, representing two-thirds of their sales.

The RDX has done well since its 2013 redesign moved it to conventional V6 power and larger size. This third generation increases the size yet again, but shrinks the engine and goes back to turbo power, now paired with an all-new platform exclusive to Acura. The new platform leverages high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel, ring-frame design, and pairs it with MacPherson strut front suspension, five-link independent rear suspension and available adaptive dampers. The wheelbase is 2.6 inches longer and overall length 2.5 inches longer (108.3 wheelbase and 186.9 length) than the 2018 RDX, which opens up passenger space and grows trunk space by over three cubic feet.

With more mass to carry around, Acura wanted more torque, so replacing the V6 is the 2.0T VTEC turbo we’re starting to see in every Honda product. Direct injection, variable valve timing and turbocharging contribute to 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, down 7 hp, but up 28 lb-ft, and it comes on from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm (previously 252 lb.-ft. at 4,900 rpm), so it should get moving easily. The RDX also uses the new 10-speed transmission Honda developed, which should help with acceleration and efficiency.

A new edition of Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive promises excellent traction and performance-enhancing torque vectoring. The new generation of SH-AWD can send up to 70 percent of its power to the rear axle and all of that can go to either the right-rear or left-rear wheel for a great balancing push out of corners. The cabin looks gorgeous in cream leather with open-pore Olive Ash wood, but the A-Spec gets the sporty treatment with red leather, real aluminum accents and a chunky steering wheel with perforated leather. (I can’t wait to get my hands on that wheel, looks very Audi-esque.) Aside from 20-inch wheels, there’s not much in the way of performance upgrades for the A-Spec model.

The new design looks sharp, but we have our doubts about another touchpad control system. We weren’t fans of it in the Lexus NX, and we’re skeptical about it here, but Honda’s latest infotainment systems in the Odyssey and Accord have finally delivered a top notch interface, and Acura is very hyped about the new “absolute positioning” and ergonomics. The central interface is complemented by head-up display and ELS 3D Audio, and drivers are treated to a full range of driver aids.

While Acura might no be able to go toe-to-toe with the heavy hitters from Germany in the luxury segment, it delivers an excellent value proposition, and this generation should continue serving that niche, with standard 19-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable power tailgate, 10.2-inch HD Display, Apple CarPlay, 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi, 12-way heated driver and passenger sport seats. While pricing will only be announced closer to its on-sale date mid-year, we don’t expect to see any drastic pricing changes.
